A customer called with a problem: He had beautiful hardwood floors throughout his home that had been waxed with consumer-grade floor wax for years. This caused a wax buildup on the hardwood resulting in a dull, scummy appearance.
The ideal solution would have been to bring in a hardwood floor refinishing crew to strip all the wax and the finish from the floors, down to bare wood, and start over with a new urethane finish. The cost of having this done was simply too high.
Normally, stripping wax off a hardwood floor involves a tedious and time-consuming scrubbing with steel wool dipped in mineral spirits. Paying someone to do this would have been cost prohibitive.
We brought in the Square-Scrub machine that we use for stripping wax off Vinyl Composition Tile. Dry stripping the wax from the hardwood with this machine, we were able to get down to the original finish. The customer then requested that we apply a high-quality, high-gloss commercial floor wax. Although waxing a modern hardwood floor is not something we would normally recommend, we believe that with the high-quality wax application, the floor will look really good for a long time. The photos below speak for themselves.
